Ixwa Blue was commissioned by Fringe of Colour for the online arts festival Fringe of Colour Films 2021.
Working with a Condomblé High Priestess Iyá Adriana de Nanã and Frans Fanon theories on decolonisation, Thulani’s video work explores decolonising self and space.
With the aid of Google Translate, Adriana shares an ancestral visitation with Thulani as they sit across from each other at a table at Pousada Convento do Carmo, Cachoeira. Cachoeira provided an important economic link, for the colonial project, between the interior of Bahia and the capital Salvador.
Widely used in Condomblé and multiple Southern and West African spiritual practices, Wadji (Sunshine Ultramarine Blue) is a material believed to have the ability to build the astral nature of a person, place or thing to which it is applied. As Indigenous and modern communication technologies converge, the video montage traces several colonial architectural sites in Cachoeira Brazil.
